Best implies a restaurant was compared with every single other one with the many restaurants in the Milwaukee area, that's just impossible. I don't call my list a "best" list because "best" lists can be baloney. That means service should be welcoming and competent, at a minimum, although many servers go above and beyond.Ī restaurant needn't look like a temple of fine dining to make the list - there aren't a whole lot of those to begin with - but I'm looking for comfort and something about the place that reinforces the food and the experience. The food has to be so special that it makes me want to return (often, I wanted to go back the very next night).īut I'm also looking for a memorable experience overall. A menu that's original or one that honors tradition makes me take notice, as does technique that's sharp. I'm looking, first and foremost, for well-executed food that delights me. It's Top 30 - not Top Every Place Where I Had Something Good to Eat. It's a challenge to determine who makes the cut, but cut I must. That's not to say I didn't enjoy some delicious food or experience good service at these restaurants that's why I refer to the Top 30 list as My Annual Agonizing. B's, Rumpus Room, Sebastian's, Umami Moto, Wild Earth and Wolf Peach departed the list. To make room for them, Crazy Water, Honeypie Cafe, Karl Ratzsch's, Maxie's, Mr. Three more - Buckley's, Smyth and Zarletti - return after hiatuses. The seven restaurants joining the list for the first time are All Purpose, Ardent, Bavette, Goodkind, Lazy Susan, Salotto Zarletti and Mekong Cafe. Of those 10 establishments, seven are new to the list entirely, and three are returning restaurants. That led in part to the largest year-to-year turnover in restaurants on my Top 30 list since I began compiling it five years ago - a full third. I thought that a lot in the past year, struck so often by a restaurant crew's forward thinking and devotion to their craft. "Hmm," I sometimes think when I leave a new restaurant after a few visits, "this one could be a contender for Top 30."
